Background to the 100 Club (Now The Docker Club)
The 100 Club was set up about 15 years ago on the initiative of John Goodeve-Docker. Its purpose
is to provide a fun way to enable OWGS members to help the Society subsidise the golf played by
our younger members.
Each year, several OWGS members contribute a multiple of £10 to the Club, and each £10 buys
one ticket for the annual draw, which takes place at the dinner during the Spring Meeting in Rye in
early May. 40% of the total contributed during the year is made available by way of 3 prizes to the
lucky winners, and the remainder is retained by the 100 Club and then transferred to the OWGS as
required to subsidise younger members.
Encouraging younger OWs to join the OWGS was one of John’s absolute passions, so the
Committee has decided that it would be a fitting memorial to John to relaunch the 100 Club now as
“The Docker Club”.
In recent years, the Society has been lucky to receive a grant from College to help us build a
strong squad to represent us in the scratch knock-out competitions, the Halford Hewitt and the
Grafton Morrish. Thus it is intended that the future focus of The Docker Club will be on helping our
younger members of whatever golfing standard to play in the Spring and Autumn Meetings and in
our “social” matches. The cost of playing this type of golf has increased hugely in recent years
(Rye now charges £210 for 2 rounds and lunch on the Saturday of the Spring Meeting). So an
OWGS subsidy is extremely helpful in encouraging recent College leavers to participate in OWGS
events, which is an essential ingredient of ensuring the long-term future of the Society.
If you have already contributed to the 100 Club over the past 12 months by way of a regular annual
standing order, you will participate in this year’s Docker Club draw and you need do nothing more -
unless you wish to increase your contribution. If you do not currently contribute, please now
consider doing so by setting up a regular annual payment to:
Old Wellingtonian Golf Society
Barclays Bank
20-11-74

If you make your first payment on or before 30 April 2026, you will participate in the draw at this
year’s Spring Meeting on 2 May. Who knows, you might even win a prize!
