Stuart Mackie (Bl 98-03) - OWGS Halford Hewitt Captain

The OWGS once again showed promise in the Halford Hewitt, making the weekend stages for the 3rd year running. Strong showings in the opening two rounds of competition vs Whitgift and St Pauls lead us into a Saturday morning 3rd round tie with Loretto, winners in 2021, 2022 and 2023. After some early struggles, the OWGS showed true Wellingtonian grit and determination to bring several matches to close finishes, finally succumbing to a 3 1/2 to 1 1/2 defeat, but giving the opposition a real fright in the process.

We have a superb group of players, all showing great character and commitment to the Hewitt. We continue to build consistency and develop 'Hewitt IQ', an understanding of what it takes to win close matches, and also how to feel more comfortable under real pressure against the top sides when competing deeper into the tournament. A Hewitt debut was given to Harry Evans who showed composure to gain a point alongside Chris Thomas in the 3rd round match against Loretto.

We fielded 23 different OW golfers across the trial programme in Feb and March, and in truth it was one of the hardest selection processes I've been involved in. The trials consisted of matches at Sunningdale vs Bradfield, and a weekend in Deal. The trial weekend there was a great success, with 36 holes at Royal Cinque Ports on the Saturday and a 36 hole match vs Eton on the Sunday at Royal St Georges. To play 3 courses of such stature is a real positive for us as a group and we will look to continue to develop and fine tune this trial process next year and beyond.
